WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?

Cryotherapy is the controlled destruction of unwanted tissue by the precise application of extreme cold. Cryotherapy treatment refers to the removal of skin lesions and moles by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. For most people this is the most effective and least invasive treatment available.

Did you know. . . the removal of skin lesions such as skin tags, milia & cherry angiomas are no longer treatable as a standard NHS procedure?

However, the need for safe, effective removal of these skin blemishes are still necessary.

Our Doctor Led Clinic offers a quick, low risk solution to these common skin conditions with the CryoPen™.

HOW DOES CRYOTHERAPY WORK?

Cryotherapy is medical non-surgical treatment involving the removal of skin lesions by using liquid nitrogen to freeze the skin cells until they die. The freezing treatment normally involves 5-30 seconds of the liquid spray being applied with the CryoPen™; a further freezing treatment can be applied after a short break dependent on the skin type and the nature of the problem.

In the days following treatment with the CryoPen™, the treated skin lesion may become darker and will begin to crust. The crusted skin lesion will eventually flake away; this could take anywhere between 1-6 weeks. Healing time varies from patient to patient and is largely dependent on the skin type and the skin lesion that has been treated. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled for 4-6 weeks following your treatment to review the results of the Cryotherapy and assess whether a further treatment as required. Any treatments performed at review appointments are free of charge.

CAN KELOID SCARS BE TREATED WITH CRYOTHERAPY?

There are several options for Keloid treatment and removal; these include steroid injection, excision and cryotherapy. There is currently no evidence that any single form of treatment is better than another but different treatment options can successfully help to flatten them and reduce irritation.

WHAT IS A KELOID SCAR?

When a wound heals, it leaves a scar. A keloid is the name given to a scar that overgrows & becomes larger than the original wound.

It is not uncommon for any wound to form a slightly thick & raised scar - this is called a hypertrophic scar.

Unlike hypertrophic scars, keloids spread beyond the original area of skin damage & may be permanent.

An estimated 10% of people experience keloid scarring. Men and women are equally are equally affected but they are more common in people with darker skin tones (especially those of African, Hispanic or Asian descent). Other risk factors associated with keloid formation include being pregnant and being younger than 30 years of age.

Dr Ayanna Knight is fully insured to treat medical skin lesions including moles, birthmarks, keloids and seborrhoeic warts. Our Doctor led clinic offers cryotherapy to flatten and remove keloid scars. The procedure is carried out is the CryoPen™X which emits a pressurised, super fine jet of nitrous oxide from its tip, making the treatment incredibly accurate and safe.

KELOID SCARS ARE MORE COMMON IN PEOPLE WITH DARKER SKIN TONES
CAUSES CAN INCLUDE:

Acne & Chickenpox Scars

Burns & Skin Trauma

Ear Piercing

Surgical Incision & Vaccination Sites

IS CRYOTHERAPY SUITABLE FOR ME?

Cryotherapy is safe for all adults and children of all skin types and ethnicities. Cryotherapy is not recommended in patients with some medical conditions, however, following full medical consultation and skin examination with Dr Ayanna Knight your suitability for treatment will be assessed.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FOLLOWING CRYOPEN™ TREATMENT?

Following Cryotherapy treatment, the area of skin may be red and slightly swollen. In the hours that follow, the skin may become darker, slightly itchy or tender. 3-4 days following Cryotherapy, the treated skin lesion may become darker and will begin to crust. The crusted skin lesion will eventually flake away in the coming weeks.

Once this lesion comes away there will be new skin in the area treated that will be pink or slightly lighter than your normal skin tone. This skin is still healing, so it is essential to apply sunblock (SPF 50+) to sun exposed areas such as the face, neck and hands until the area has repigmented to your normal skin tone and completely healed.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

We advise full healing time could be up to 4-6 weeks although some smaller lesions may heal in less than 4 weeks. Healing time varies from patient to patient and is largely dependent on the skin type and the nature of the skin lesion that has been treated.

It is absolutely essential to apply sunblock (SPF 50+) to sun exposed areas such as the face, neck and hands until the area has completely healed and repigmented to your normal skin tone. Application of sunblock is essential following treatment to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) of the area of skin treated and to ensure optimum healing.

WILL I NEED MORE THAN ONE CRYOTHERAPY TREATMENT?

Some lesions such as large moles and skin tags in intimate areas are likely to require more than one Cryotherapy treatment. Some warts and verrucae may require 4 or more treatments. At your follow-up appointment with Dr Ayanna Knight, the results of the Cryotherapy treatment will be reviewed to assess whether a further treatment as required. Any further treatments performed at review appointments are inclusive in the price you pay at your initial appointment so there are no additional fees to pay.

The CryoPen™X is the most advanced of the CryoPen™devices available and can treat larger skin imperfections as well as medical skin lesions such as seborrhoeic warts, keloid scars and precancerous skin changes.

 IS CRYOTHERAPY SAFE?

Cryotherapy with the CryoPen™ is very safe and incredibly effective. It is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure which does not require any needles or injections; infection risk is extremely low. The treatment is 100% sterile so there is no risk of cross-contamination. Following your treatment Dr Ayanna Knight will discuss comprehensive aftercare to minimise any possible side effects and ensure effective results.

CAN I PROCEED WITH A TREATMENT ON THE SAME DAY AS CONSULTATION?

Following a full medical consultation including skin health & lifestyle assessment to ascertain suitability for treatment, Dr Ayanna Knight will advise on the most effective treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

If no contraindications are identified for the treatment and you feel fully informed about the procedure, Dr Ayanna Knight will offer you the option to proceed with the treatment on the same day.
