Hay Fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an inflammation in the tissues lining the nose. This swelling, irritation and redness in the nose is triggered when the immune system overreacts to allergens such as pollen, pet hair, dust or mould. The resulting symptoms can be disabling for some patients and have a huge impact on work, study and leisure activities particularly during the summer months. Hay Fever effects around 15-20% of the population, causing many to suffer and unfortunately there is no cure.
Steroid injection with Kenalog (Triamcinolone) has proved to be an effective treatment for Hay Fever and can have a transformative effect for many patients in cases where conventional anti-allergy therapy has failed. In the majority of cases, only one injection is required per year. Treatment with the Kenalog steroid injection can significantly reduce and prevent Hay Fever or seasonal allergy symptoms for the duration of the entire pollen or allergen season.
WHAT IS HAY FEVER?
Hay Fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, effects around 15-20% of the population. The inflammatory response which results in swelling, congestion, irritation and redness in the nose, is triggered when the immune system overreacts to allergens such as pollen, pet hair, dust or mould. Two components contribute to the development of allergies; inherited genetics and environmental exposures.
IgE antibodies, a protein produced by the immune system, coupled with the allergen such as dust or pollen, activates the release of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine from mast cells. The symptoms of allergies are similar with a common cold but they often last more than two weeks and do not include a fever.
Symptoms and signs of Hay Fever include red, itchy, watery eyes, blocked or running nose and sneezing. The onset of these which occur within minutes after exposure and can affect sleep, the ability to concentrate and work. Many people with hay fever also have Asthma, Allergic Conjunctivitis or Atopic Dermatitis. Steroid injection with Kenalog (Triamcinolone) has proved to be an effective treatment for Hay Fever, relieving patients of these sometimes disabling symptoms.
HOW IS HAY FEVER TREATED?
UK and international guidelines suggest the management of Hayfever should start with allergen avoidance; if that fails treatment with an antihistamine. Where these treatments are ineffective, regular intranasal corticosteroids should be used. Intranasal steroids are more effective if used at the start of the season and in the presence of established nasal congestion, a topical decongestant may be used for up to one week as a pre-treatment. Occasionally for patients with severe symptoms not responding to topical steroids and antihistamines and when stringent control of symptoms is required, for example sitting exam or getting married, it may be reasonable to supplement maintenance treatment with a brief course of oral corticosteroids. These should however be used in the lowest effective dose (e.g. prednisolone up to 20 mg daily for up to 5 days).
Nasal steroids, antihistamines and leukotriene receptor antagonists can help effectively reduce Hay Fever symptoms, however, in many cases they are not sufficient or are associated with side effects.
People with exposure to larger amount of allergens such as pollen may have built up a tolerance to oral or topical Hay Fever medications. Steroid injection with Kenalog has proved to be an effective treatment and prevention for Hay Fever symptoms.
WHAT IS KENALOG?
The Kenalog injection contains Triamcinolone 40mg/ml as the active ingredient. Tramcinolone belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids. Corticosteroids occur naturally in the body and help to maintain health and wellbeing. Boosting your body with extra corticosteroid is an effective way to treat various illnesses involving inflammation in the body.
Kenalog IA/IM injection is for the treatment of joint pain, swelling and stiffness in inflammatory conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. Kenalog is also an effective treatment for various allergic disorders including asthma, seasonal allergies, hormone imbalances and problems with the digestive system, kidneys or skin.
The Kenalog corticosteroid injection reduces the release of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine and can significantly reduce and prevent Hay Fever or seasonal allergy symptoms for the duration of the entire pollen or allergen season. Triamcinolone (Kenalog) can be given via the intra-muscular (IM) or intra-articular (IA) route. 4 mg is equivalent to 5mg of Prednisolone and the usual dose given is between 40-80mg in a season.
For Hay Fever and seasonal allergy symptom treatment and prevention, Triamcinolone (Kenalog) is given by IM injection. The licensed indications include use in seasonal allergies in patients who do not respond to conventional therapy.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
The effect of the injection will vary from patient to patient. In terms of response and control of Hay Fever symptoms, the majority of patients who are treated with the Kenalog steroid injection report a very positive result with improvement in overall quality of life.
Following injection of Kenalog, the treatment starts working almost immediately and typically becomes effective from anywhere between 1-48 hours after administration. It has been found that if Kenalog is administered when Hayfever symptoms first appear, the treatment can give symptom remission that lasts for the duration of the entire pollen or allergen season (usually three to six months).
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS & SIDE EFFECTS OF KENALOG HAY FEVER TREATMENT?
There are various potential side effects to steroid injections. Systemic and local side effects may occur following injection as systemic absorption of Triamcinolone occurs although this is minimal. Side effects are rare, but it is important to be aware of them before you make a decision on having a steroid injection. Examples include:
Common Side Effects: may affect up to 1 in 10 people:
Increased risk of infection
Injection site reactions: tenderness, pain, itching
Uncommon Side Effects: may affect up to 1 in 100 people:
Adrenal suppression & increased susceptibility to infections
Tiredness, Vertigo, low blood pressure
Feeling agitated or anxious
High body temperature
Thinning of bones
Indigestion, stomach pain
Mild form of Diabetes
Fluid retention, heart problems, palpitations, high blood pressure
Psychiatric & psychological problems
Irregular periods; post-menopausal women may experience vaginal bleeding
Local injection site reactions: abscess, pain, skin colour change, dermal or fat pad atrophy or depressions in the skin at the injection site may occur due to the presence of adrenal steroid crystals in the dermis
Corticosteroid effects may be enhanced in those patients with Hypothyroidism or Cirrhosis
Kenalog is a corticosteroid which works by suppressing your immune system and hence will reduce the inflammation in your body caused by pollen and other allergens. People who persistently take steroid injections are prone to more infections as their immune system can become weak. Suppression of the inflammatory response and immune function increases the susceptibility to fungal, bacterial or viral infections and their severity. Corticosteroids may mask some signs of infection.
In the following cases Kenalog steroid injection will not be administered:
